Google ML Kit (barcode scanning, vision common, common, vision interfaces and
play-services-mlkit-barcode-scanning) is not open source. The Android wallet's
QR scanner (mobile_scanner) links it. Shear accepted Google's terms on
2026-10-14 (docs/licensing-audit.md, decision 3). These are Google's terms,
not a licence Shear grants, and they bind Shear as the app developer:
ML Kit Terms of Service (last modified May 14, 2025)
https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/terms
Google APIs Terms of Service, which the ML Kit Terms incorporate
https://developers.google.com/terms
What the terms require of Shear:
No reverse engineering. The ML Kit Terms forbid reverse engineering or
extracting the source code of ML Kit or its models, except where the law
expressly allows it.
Attribution. Google APIs Terms, Section 6(b): Shear displays any
attribution Google requires in the ML Kit documentation, and uses Google's
brand features only as the Google Brand Features Use Guidelines allow.
Section 6(c): Shear makes no statement suggesting partnership with,
sponsorship by, or endorsement by Google. When checked on 2026-10-14, the
ML Kit barcode-scanning documentation required no attribution beyond this
notice.
Data use. Under the ML Kit Terms, images are processed on the device, and
ML Kit does not send them or the scan results to Google. ML Kit may contact
Google servers for bug fixes, updated models and hardware compatibility
information, and it sends Google metrics about how the API performs and is
used (Google's ML Kit Android data disclosure lists device information,
package name and app version, per-installation identifiers, performance
metrics, API configuration, input and output sizes, feature version, event
types and error codes). Google uses these metrics to measure performance,
debug, maintain and improve the APIs and to detect misuse or abuse, as
described in Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy).
Shear must tell users of the app about this processing as the law
requires, and Google APIs Terms Section 3(d) requires a privacy policy
that describes it.

The iOS app does not use ML Kit; mobile_scanner uses Apple's Vision framework
there (wallet/ios/Podfile.lock has no ML Kit pod).
